Before the boutique hotels, rooftop bars, and velvet ropes, the Meatpacking District belonged to a different crowd. By day, it was a working neighborhood of slaughterhouses and warehouses, with cobblestone streets full of delivery trucks, workers in bloodstained aprons, and the industrial clatter of a city’s food supply being hauled in and out. It was loud, gritty, and anything but glamorous.

Then the sun went down, and the neighborhood changed.
When the butchers went home, the streets emptied out, and the same features that made the area feel forgotten by day made it perfect for everyone else. Cheap rents, big industrial spaces, and hardly any neighbors to complain about the noise meant that people who weren’t welcome elsewhere in the city could finally claim a place of their own. Behind unmarked doors and unassuming warehouse facades, a whole other world came to life.
In the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, the Meatpacking District became one of the most electric corners of queer New York. The music was loud, the dance floors were packed, and the nights stretched until sunrise. These were places of creativity and glamor, of freedom and desire, where you could shed the person you had to be during the day and become the person you actually were.

Most of those clubs are gone now. The doors have been replaced by designer storefronts, the warehouses by luxury condos, and the trucks by tourists on their way to the High Line. But the stories didn’t disappear with the venues.
Christopher Street Tours’ new Lost Nightclubs of New York walking tour takes you back to that era. It explores the queer underground venues of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s that once pulsated with energy, creativity, glamour, and sex. These clubs were more than places to go out. For many people, they were places to be themselves. They were where communities formed, where artists and performers found their audiences, and where a generation of LGBTQ+ New Yorkers found freedom that was hard to come by elsewhere.
Join your local queer tour guide as they lead you through the stories behind these spaces, from iconic dance floors to the back rooms. You’ll see how the clubs shaped the people who filled them and left a lasting mark on the city’s culture.
